Public Appeal – Dangerous E-Scooter Riding in Abbots Langley

Today, police have received multiple reports of two young males riding e-scooters dangerously along High Street, Abbots Langley, and near the SPAR on School Mead.

Their actions have reportedly almost caused three separate road traffic collisions, putting pedestrians, motorists, and themselves at serious risk. The riders also made off from police when approached.

Please be aware that the use of privately owned e-scooters on public roads, pavements, and public places is generally against UK law unless they are part of an approved rental scheme. These riders were fully aware they should not have been using the e-scooters in this manner and their behaviour has created a significant danger to the public.

We would like to remind everyone that dangerous riding can have serious consequences and could result in injury or loss of life.

What are the penalties for illegal e-scooter use?

Privately owned e-scooters are not legal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle paths or other public places. Police can seize the e-scooter and riders may receive a £300 fixed penalty notice and 6 points on their driving licence (or future licence record) for riding without insurance. Further offences, including dangerous riding, may result in prosecution through the courts.

In this case, the riders' actions have reportedly almost caused three collisions and put members of the public at risk. We urge parents and guardians to speak with young people about the dangers and legal consequences of riding e-scooters illegally.
